Missoula Ski Team Dryland Training

Greetings Parents and Racers,

School's back in session and winter is right around the corner! Now is the time to start thinking about getting in shape for the coming race season. If we're big and strong, we can make the most of early season time on snow; reduce the chance of injury, dial down fatigue and dial up the FUN!

MSEF is offering an optional dryland training program for any athletes who are interested. For those who have attended in the past, it will be the same drill. Meet in the Gateway to the Rattlesnake Park (East side of Van Buren, right next to I-90) by 4:15. Practice will focus on agility, flexibility, cardio, and core strength and will conclude at 5:15. The YSL team will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and the J3&UPs will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. An optional gymnastics class will be offered on Fridays from 4 to 5 and will be open to both age groups. The official start of dryland will be Tuesday, Oct 4th and will conclude Friday, Nov 18th.

I am excited that we will again be able to have a gymnastics session - those who participated last year had a blast. The first class will be Friday, Oct 7th and be held 7 consecutive Fridays until Nov. 18th. To enroll in the Friday gymnastics class, each racer must have a signed waiver -
Gym Activity Waiver- and payment before the start of the first class. You may print out a copy of the attached waiver, or plan to fill one out the first Friday. The class will cost $66.50, which breaks down to $9.50 a class - a bargain for access to the instructors, tramps, and foam pit. The spatial awareness the racers gain from the movement instruction we are given becomes a huge asset in the race course. I highly recommend this optional class.

Winter is right around the corner, though hard to believe after such a gorgeous weekend. I'm excited for another tremendous ski season. To all the racers not otherwise committed with sports in October and November, I'm calling out to you to join me for dryland! We'll do some working out, we'll play some games, we'll get stronger, and we'll have fun! Stay tuned for more news or updates.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The
MSEF medical release form and the MSEF waiver and consent form will be required for participation.

Best,
Ben Stonebraker
MSEF Assistant Head Coach

Grizzly Ski Team (GST)

Fee - $295

Saturdays, January 7, 2012 through March 3, 2012

2 fun races - Final "Cookie Cup" race on Mar 3, 2012

Award Ceremony and Skier Evaluations

The Grizzly Ski Team program is a 9-week program for 6 to 11 year olds with previous skiing experience. GST develops all-mountain skills in young skiers and prepares them for advancement to MSEF’s race program. Participants are eligible for 3 years or through age 11. (I.e. if the athlete starts GST at age 6, they will be encouraged to join the Development Team or YSL program at age 9 – this progression assures that young skiers continue to advance their skill level.) Participants must be able to ski Snowbowl top-to-bottom on either 2nd Thought or Paradise runs.

Coaches focus on teaching the fundamentals of alpine skiing, building the young skier’s confidence to handle any terrain – you’ll be amazed at how quickly your child will conquer the mountain! Kids are divided by age and ability into small groups with highly qualified coaches.

Each Saturday, GST athletes practice drills, exercises and free ski to improve their technique and confidence on the snow. Athletes will participate in 2 fun races – an exercise to introduce them to alpine ski racing. Lunch and lift tickets are not included in the fee.

NOTE: Demand for this program has grown rapidly – we have a limited number of openings. Register soon!

Great Divide Race Feb. 18-19, 2012
Discovery Basin Race Mar 3-4, 2012
Additional fee for Christmas Camp

Offered to athletes ages 8 – 12, this program provides a great transition from GST to YSL (Youth Ski League). DEVO athletes will train every Saturday as members of the YSL program (see below for details). This is an 11-12 week program, depending on snow conditions.

Athletes are expected to participate in 2 YSL races – Great Divide Ski Area (near Helena), February 18 and 19 and Discovery Ski Area (near Phillipsburg), March 3 and 4. Athletes may chose to race only one day at each event. Great Divide and Discovery races are encouraged as these races are close to Missoula and do not require over-night lodging. Participation in these races is a great opportunity for athletes and parents to be introduced to youth ski racing. Race/coaching fees are not included in the fee.

Note: After 2 seasons of participation in the DEVO program, athletes are encouraged to join the YSL program to further advance their alpine racing skills.
